Are There Disadvantages to CEREC Same Day Porcelain Crowns?

Ask any dentist who knows how to perform ceramic reconstruction and they will tell you that it is the best option for individuals requiring dental crowns. Ceramic reconstructions offer a number of advantages to both dentists and patients.

While dentists can do what would otherwise take them weeks in a matter of hours, patients do not experience any pain with this procedure. It is no surprise that CEREC is highly lauded, but it is important to realize that there are some serious drawbacks which are often overlooked.

One of the biggest disadvantages of using ceramic reconstruction technology to insert a crown in your teeth stems from the fact that ceramic crowns are milled from a single block of ceramic. This means that it is almost impossible to achieve a color that is near identical to your teeth.

If your ceramic reconstruction crown is meant for one of your visible teeth, many will be able to notice that you have had work done. This is not necessarily the case with crowns made from other materials.

Dental technologists have developed colored ceramic restorations to make them look more natural when inserted onto a troubled tooth. While some dentists have successfully improved the appearance of ceramic crowns using ceramic blocks with color gradients, most struggle to blend in the right colors to meet a patient’s specific needs. Many prefer more conventional crowns, especially for their more visible teeth, so that they can retain their perfect smile.

It is also important to ensure that your dentist not only has certified equipment to conduct CEREC, but also has an adequate amount of training in the field. One should also make sure that their dentist does not leave any of the highly technical CEREC process to any dental assistants who do not have sufficient training. Since the process is extremely technical, it should only be left to a certified professional, or else you might not get the results you were promised.

However, the drawbacks of CEREC crowns are easily outweighed by the innumerable advantages it offers. A dentist who spends a sufficient amount of time staining and glazing the porcelain will be able to produce a more esthetic crown.

Moreover, you will not need to spend your money and time going to the dentist more than once, since this procedure guarantees excellent results with only one appointment. While there is still room for improvement in the overall experience of ceramic reconstruction, there is no doubt that it is the best option available.
